Words, by jess deacon.
I like them, I write them, I share them. This is a collection of observations and aimful ramblings about things that are important to me.
You should pay me for content that I haven’t thought about or written
Yeah, you read that right. But don’t worry — I don’t actually mean it. That would be ludicrous, wouldn’t it?
Let’s talk about Artificial Intelligence
“You wouldn’t use stock photography to showcase your team, so why would you ask AI to write your ‘About’ section?”
How’s that for a great analogy!
Connecting the dots
Connecting the dots sort of reminds me of the phrase paint by numbers, and I can’t decide whether that’s a bad thing or a good thing. Sometimes analogies do us all great favours. But it’s what I do. I connect dots, communicatively speaking.
My dad and the dictionary.
Just a little bit about why I love my dad, the dictionary, and the words within. And how I use this to create bespoke copy for my clients.
UHOH
According to the dictionary, “UHOH” is technically “uh-oh”, but sometimes the occasion calls for writing things in caps and pushing words together to mimic the way they come out of your mouth in such moments. I am a creative and I have space and time in front of me. UHOH is the appropriate term, I can assure you.
Standing Out From The Crowd
What happens when your star sign isn’t Leo? Or when you don’t have performance blood running through your veins, and are therefore not all that comfortable putting yourself - or your business - out there in a public way? walk the walk.

Last week I decided it was time to solve this problem.
sagacious strategy.
Strategy = a game plan, a method, a grand design.
Sagacious = clever, clear-sighted, foxy, smooth.
Together? That’s what I do.
Word on the street.
I’m celebrating International Women’s Day by sharing a project that I’ve been working on with two exceptional women. Presenting, the Womanhood Journal. Click through to read more about this very rewarding project.
wondrous words.
A little bit about why I love words, and the variety of the words I’ve recently been asked to write.
Communication.
This week at Deacon Rd. I’m writing a blog post about the colours of Pounamu, an instructional card for cocktail makers, a biography for a talented designer and a brand audit of an up-and-coming personal care brand. Among other things. This is why I value the skill of effective communication.
The art of taking a chance.
Taking a chance is invigorating. Whether it be business, life or love. It challenges the norm and it forces you to think outside of the box. It presents new challenges and new opportunities. Both of which are key factors when it comes to growth.
toru hurō for Te Reo in our lexicon.
The way various organisations in New Zealand are embracing a more bilingual approach to their communications is long overdue, and I want to be part of this movement.
Hello yellow.
One thing that 2020 has taught us is that there’s power in the side hustle. Do you need help to make your business stand out from the crowd?
the power of editing.
Editing is exercise for your brain, which is never a bad thing. Editing is what makes writing good, good writing great and great writing the best it can be.
